SolPlay is excited to partner with Phoenix Bikes to provide a unique opportunity for youth mechanics to participate in a week long biking and camping trip.

Through generous donations, we will sponsor two Phoenix Bikes Youth Mechanics!

C&O Canal Bike Camp
A camping adventure on wheels
July 12-17 (6 Days 5 Nights)
SolPlay Campers will bike the length of the C&O Canal providing an excellent opportunity to explore original Canal Era structures, including locks, lock houses and aqueducts, which serve as reminders of the canal's role during the time of America’s young government.  The canal's remains illustrate many stories of American history, including western expansion, transportation, engineering, the Civil War, immigration, industry and commerce.  The canal's towpath provides a nearly level, continuous trail through which we will experience the history and nature of the Potomac River Valley.

In addition to participating in camp activities, Phoenix Youth Mechanics will have an opportunity to develop leadership and other life skills.  Mechanics will have responsibility for:

  • Performing pre-camp bike check for all SolPlay Campers.  Mechanics will make recommendations for repairs, canal trail suitability, etc.
  • Leading a discussion regarding bike safety on the trail at C&O trail head
  • Making repairs as need during daily rides and assessing camper bikes each evening and repair/adjust as needed.
  • Leading one bike repair clinic each during the camp on a specific topic (eg - changing a tire).

Make donations at http://www.phoenixbikes.org/get-involved/donations/ and contact Laura Novak at  info@solplay.net or Meg Rapelye-Goguen at meg@phoenixbikes.org so that we may earmark the funds.

Let’s Cleanup our neighborhood stream and Sparrow Pond!

Saturday, March 14, 2015 from 9am to 11am

Free gloves and trash bags will be distributed.  A short (10min) neighborly introduction and a safety briefing will start at 9am in the Abingdon Cul-de-Sac.

We pick up trash on the banks of the stream which unites South Arlington Forest and Barcroft, from Rt 50 to Sparrow Pond.  Get your volunteer hours, feel good about your work, send out your kids!  Bring a camera and post photos to the SolPlay Facebook site. Motivated by the 27th Annual Potomac River Watershed Cleanup

Arlington Parks and Recreation is working to support the Alice Ferguson Foundation Potomac watershed cleanup efforts.  For additional information about what volunteers may expect, please visit: http://fergusonfoundation.org/trash-free-potomac-watershed-initiative/potomac-river-watershed-cleanup/volunteers/

Our streams connect us to our neighbors, other neighborhoods, to Four Mile Run, to the Potomac, Chesapeake Bay and beyond.

How long is Four Mile Run?  Want to take an urban hike and discover the origin and termination of Four Mile Run? A spring walk for all adventurous ages is being planned.  Let us know if you’re interested. (Email info@solplay.net)   - Thanks for joining us.
